Lookout Mountain

David and I could not wait for Memorial Day Weekend. Each day was planned out – all with the intention of being outside and seeing something new. We had spent the past few weekends renovating our backyard and patio area, so we were ready for a break.

The first day of our long weekend was spent driving to the top of Lookout Mountain – a 7,300-foot mountain southwest of downtown Golden. Not only did it have amazing views of the town and surrounding foothills, but sitting at the summit was Buffalo Bill’s grave, and a museum completely dedicated to his life. It was all a little kitschy, but it was fun – we truly felt like tourists visiting the Wild West.

Down the road we made a quick stop at the nature center, which showcased life in the foothills of Colorado, and Boettcher Mansion, which was unfortunately closed due to a wedding. About halfway down the mountain a group of long boarders flew by us wearing nothing more than motorcycle helmets for protection. And at the bottom of the mountain we saw a few paragliders floating down from its summit.

The rest of the afternoon was spent driving through Clear Creek Canyon, located just north of Lookout Mountain. We stopped several times to look at the river, and explore the short paths off the side of the road. David found some boulders to climb while I took photos. Heading back home we crossed a bridge over the interstate that had an amazing view of the Rockies – only in Colorado would someone’s commute look like that.
