Fall Camping In September

This year fall came early to Colorado. Very early. Because of the drought, the leaves in higher elevations started to change color in the beginning of September, rather than its usual time in October. So Dave and I packed up the R-pod, and spent the weekend in the mountains to do some leaf peeping.

We managed to claim an amazing spot at Camp Dick. It was completely surrounded by trees – we even had our own patch of yellow aspens. And to top it off – it was perfectly level! We were able to just park the camper and settle in for the night.

On Saturday morning Dave made blueberry pancakes for breakfast. One of my favorite things about camping are mornings in our R-Pod. I love having coffee in bed, with views of beautiful evergreens out every window, watching the campground wake up. After we ate, we decided to spend the day driving the Peak-to-Peak Highway towards Nederland, turning down every road along the way.

CR-96 was a new road we discovered, and it ended up being the most scenic one of the day. Not only was the dirt road lined with bright yellow and orange aspens, but it led to a large reservoir with great views of the mountains!

To be honest, the entire day felt a little off. We couldn’t believe that we were looking at fall leaves on a hot summer day in the beginning of September! No sweaters. No hot chocolates. Everything about it just seemed wrong!

Back at the campground, we ate a small snack before dinner. Dave roasted some figs over the fire to put on top of cheese and crackers.

We then took Biscuits for a walk on the trail near our campsite. Although it arrived way too early, I was excited to plan more fall festivities for our upcoming weekends.
