Ice skating on a frozen lake is definitely a bucket list activity. In the past, David and I had never lived in an area where this was even possible. Now that we call Colorado home, little did we know that about an hour away from us – in a small town called Evergreen – Lake Evergreen transforms from eight-acres of sparkling water to a solid block of ice every winter. CNN has even declared it one of the top ten most beautiful ice rinks in the world!
It was like a winter scene from a movie. The lake was completely surrounded by green pine trees and rolling mountains peppered in snow. The Lake House resembled a rustic ski chalet transplanted from Aspen. And the sky was so blue it didn’t look real. David and I clumsily made our way a few times around the rink, each lap getting a little braver and picking up more speed. We later grabbed lunch downtown at Java Groove, a cozy café off the main road with tasty sandwiches and cakes.
On a whim David and I took a different route back home, following Bear Creek as it zigzagged through the rocky walls of Bear Creek Canyon. It eventually led us to the town of Morrison, where we took a detour through Red Rocks just as the setting sun perfectly lit up the natural amphitheater.
